Singapore Memerang lock in squad for Asian Championship

The newest international rugby league team, the Singapore Memerang, have officially announced their inaugural squad to take part in the Asian Championship and to play the Japan Samurais at the International School Manila in Philippines this Thursday.

The team, which comprises a number of players from Australia who have family heritage to the city-state, are a mix of experience and exciting young talent. For some, this game will be their first rugby league game having crossed over from rugby union, yet there will be a number of players with playing experience in Australia. One of those players is Captain (await confirmation) Wayne Baxter who played for the Glebe Dirty Reds in the Sydney Shield competition in the 2025 season. (Insert quote from Wayne – in particular how proud he is to represent his mother / grandmother).

Also featuring in the team will be former Singapore rugby union internationals Haresh Krishnan, Tom Chamberlain and Lucius Yau. Chamberlain has previously played rugby league whilst studying in Scotland stated “insert quote from Tom – along lines of how happy he is to see rugby league being developed in Singapore and that he believe’s there is a lot of growth potential for the sport in SG).

Amongst the younger players, South Sydney Rabbitohs U21’s player Tylan Berryman will be one to watch, whilst utility Rahul Baskar (Anglo-Chinese School International) and forward Brendan Liu (St Andrews School) will represent the emerging domestic talent being provided opportunity to represent their nation.

For Head Coach Dane Campbell, the game against Japan marks his 2nd foray into international coaching having previously coached Vanuatu in 2011. “I’m really excited for the players and staff to be able to have the opportunity to represent Singapore on the international stage. There is no greater feeling than getting to represent your country and I know that their families will be incredibly proud of them wearing the red and white of Singapore”.

Campbell also added “There has been a lot of background work done to make this game and tour a reality and I want to thank sponsors InvestStream; Sea Ventures Maritime; Seagull Group and Aussie Expat Home Loans for their generosity and faith in what we are trying to do in developing rugby league in Singapore. We are in our infancy, yet we have big plans and I am confident that the players are ready for the challenge against Japan and we all aim to do everyone back in Singapore and those supporting us from afar proud”.
